A Day in the Life of…
John Scally!
John is one of our Managing Coordinators at our Head Office in Edinburgh. We asked him a series of questions all about what his day to day is like at AGR as a Managing Coordinator.
What does a typical day look like for you?
I always try to get an early start to my day by getting into the office around 7:30am to make my essential cup of coffee, as I wouldn’t be able to survive without it! My day properly begins around 8am where I check my calendar, sort through my emails, and carry out any urgent tasks. Then I will write my to-do list for the day, I’d be lost without one (as many of us would John).
Throughout the day I am in and out of meetings, whether that is a zoom meeting with clients or an in-person chat with some of our candidates. Then I finish around 5pm where I head home and unwind by watching some football – I’d tell you my team, but I don’t want to cause any controversy – or I’ll binge watch whatever is popular on Netflix!
What excites you the most about your job?
The thing that excites me the most about working at AGR is dealing with a wide range of different people such as clients, partners and candidates who all have brilliantly different characters, especially due to our international footprint.
It is never boring in our Edinburgh office, I enjoy working with my colleagues who are a wonderful bunch which is definitely one of the perks of my job. The reality is that the environment is very fast paced, but this is what makes it exciting as it means no two days are the same. I am always surprised with interesting new tasks, which allows me to learn and grow as a person and professionally.
I am also especially fond of the main company values of adaptability, commitment, integrity, and teamwork. I believe these tenants are the key reason the culture at AGR is so positive and enjoyable, whether you’re in the Edinburgh office or the Dubai office, the feel about the place is always consistent.
How did you begin in the offshore industry?
I joined AGR back in the day when I was a fresh-faced 17-year-old, straight out of school. I was referred by a friend of a friend to AGR and I haven’t looked back since as it was a fantastic industry to start my career in.
I am very grateful to AGR for giving me my start. Stuart Hunter and Cameron Taylor have created a company where they aid the support of their staff and encourage them to success in their career paths.
What made you want to work for AGR?
Well firstly, I wanted to work for AGR as I had an interest in the energy industry since high school. I knew the offshore and energy sectors were booming sectors with unlimited potential, and it seemed like a refreshing place to work.
When I had my interview, I knew that each day would be unique, and I would be able to deal with something different on a daily basis. You don’t want to be bored with your job and I knew AGR wouldn’t disappoint. I also knew that I would be able to gain invaluable experience, and AGR would uncover great career development and opportunities.
What advice would you give to anyone looking to start off in this industry?
My top tips for someone looking to start a career in the offshore industry would be to come into it with an open mind. Try your best to learn as much as you can about the industry on the side to ensure you can grow within your role – knowledge is key! The more you can learn about the industry, the more room you will have for growth in your career, so it is important to learn as much as you can.
Another piece of advice I can offer is to learn to enjoy your work, even though it is a very fast paced and passionate environment, try your best to enjoy what you do by always helping the people you work with.
