Celebrating a Decade of Excellence: Samantha Wood’s 10 Years at AGR
This year marks a significant milestone for AGR Senior Client Consultant Samantha Wood, who is celebrating 10 years of success in energy recruitment. To celebrate this achievement, we sat down with Samantha to reflect on her journey at AGR, the key lessons she has learned, and the insights she has gained over the past decade in the industry.
Her experience highlights the evolution of energy recruitment, the importance of building strong relationships, and the ever-changing landscape of talent acquisition in the sector. Samantha’s dedication, expertise, and commitment to delivering the best solutions for clients and candidates have played a vital role in AGR’s ongoing success.
Can you share a bit about your background before joining the industry? What led you to take the leap into recruitment?
After spending nine years working in a supermarket, I knew it was time for a change. While the role had given me invaluable experience in customer service, teamwork, and problem-solving, I felt the need for something new—something that would challenge me in different ways and open new doors.
That’s when an acquaintance introduced me to Stuart, who had recently founded AGR and was looking to grow his team. Recruitment wasn’t something I had considered before, but after learning more about the energy sector and the opportunities within it, I decided to take the leap.
Joining AGR has been a game-changer. The fast-paced nature of recruitment, the chance to connect talented individuals with exciting career opportunities, and the ability to be part of a growing business have all been incredibly rewarding. The transition from retail to recruitment wasn’t without its challenges, but the skills I developed—communication, resilience, and adaptability—proved to be just as valuable in this new role.
What has been the most rewarding part of your day-to-day job at AGR?
One of the most rewarding aspects of my role as a Senior Client Consultant is the opportunity to help people secure meaningful employment in the oil and gas industry—not just locally, but all over the world. Every day, I get to connect skilled professionals with opportunities that align with their expertise, career aspirations, and personal goals.
The energy sector is dynamic and ever evolving, and I take great pride in being part of an industry that plays such a crucial role in the global economy. Whether it’s helping someone land their first role in oil and gas or assisting an experienced professional in taking the next step in their career, knowing that my work has a real, positive impact on people’s lives is incredibly fulfilling.
Beyond placements, it’s about building relationships, offering guidance, and providing support throughout the hiring process—from the first conversation to the moment they start their new role. Seeing candidates thrive in their new positions and knowing I played a part in their journey is what makes this job truly special.
What are you most proud of about yourself throughout your journey at AGR?
One of the things I am most proud of in my career is how I have worked my way up from a Candidate Coordinator to a Senior Client Consultant. It has been a journey of hard work, continuous learning, and perseverance, proving that focus and dedication truly open doors to great opportunities.
When I first started in recruitment, I had no idea how much I would grow—not just in my role but as a professional. I embraced every challenge, learned from every experience, and stayed committed to developing my skills. Each step forward has been a testament to the fact that progress is possible when you stay determined and put in the effort.
But beyond personal achievements, what means the most to me is setting an example for my daughter. I want her to see that no matter where you start, with the right mindset and work ethic, you can achieve anything. I hope my journey shows her that success isn’t about luck—it’s about resilience, dedication, and always striving to be better.
Looking ahead, I’m excited to continue growing, taking on new challenges, and helping others on their career paths—just as I have carved out my own.
What advice would you give to someone just starting their career in recruitment in the energy industry?
If you’re considering a career change—go for it! You never know where it might lead. Taking that leap was one of the best decisions I’ve made, and recruitment has turned out to be one of the most rewarding jobs I’ve ever had.
From the opportunity to travel the world to building relationships with industry professionals, hiring managers, and candidates, this role has opened doors I never imagined. It has also given me the chance to learn and grow in a sector I initially knew nothing about—proof that with the right mindset, you can succeed in any industry.
My biggest advice? Ask as many questions as possible and never be afraid to speak up when you don’t know something. Your team is there to support you, and the more you learn, the more confident you’ll become.
Change can be daunting, but sometimes, the best opportunities come from stepping outside your comfort zone.
What motivates you when faced with tough situations in your role?
Like any job, recruitment comes with its challenges—tight deadlines, unexpected setbacks, and moments where things don’t go as planned. But when I face tough situations, I remind myself why I do this and who I do it for—my daughter.
She is my biggest motivation. Knowing that I’m working hard to build a better future for her keeps me pushing forward, even when things get difficult. I want her to see that challenges aren’t roadblocks—they’re stepping stones to growth.
Looking back, if you could give your younger self a piece of advice at the start of your career, what would it be?
Believe in yourself and don’t be afraid to step outside your comfort zone.
Change can be intimidating, and there will be moments of doubt, but growth happens when you push yourself beyond what feels familiar. Take every opportunity to learn, ask questions, and challenge yourself—even when it feels uncomfortable. The setbacks and tough days will come, but they’ll only make you stronger.
Most importantly, trust the process. Every role, every experience, and every challenge is shaping you into the person you’re meant to become. Stay focused, stay resilient, and always remember why you started.
As we celebrate this achievement, we extend our gratitude to Samantha for her hard work and contributions. We look forward to seeing what the next decade brings for her and for AGR as we continue to grow and lead in energy recruitment.
